Often termed the ‘NHS Soups and Shakes’ diet, and formerly known as the NHS Low Calorie Diet Programme, the NHS Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programme is a free new service for people with Type 2 diabetes.

Combining specialist nutrition, psychology and physical activity, the NHS Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programme promotes rapid weight loss, long term behaviour change and type two diabetes remission.

You’ll be supported throughout the programme by your Health and Wellbeing Diabetes Practitioner via regular contact, with online learning and supporting resources.

The programme is also supported by GPs, practice nurses, diabetes practitioners, dietitians, clinical psychologists and exercise specialists.

Xyla Health & Wellbeing is a dynamic, and accomplished organisation dedicated to making the UK’s local and workplace communities healthier, and are our provider for the service.

Frequently asked questions about the NHS Type 2 Diabetes Path to Remission Programme

Remission in people with Type 2 diabetes means that your blood sugar levels are no longer in the range for diabetes, without needing to take any diabetes medication.

Research from the Diabetes Remission Clinical Trial (DiRECT), and the Doctor Referral of Overweight People to Low Energy total diet replacement Treatment (DROPLET), tells us that remission is most likely to be achievable closer to your diagnosis – and is strongly linked to weight loss.

Some people call this reversing Type 2 diabetes, but we prefer the term ‘remission’ because your Type 2 diabetes can come back.

There’s no guarantee you will reach remission as the research so far suggests that it isn’t possible for everyone. However, there are many other benefits to losing extra weight. If you adhere to the programme you can expect to lose ~10% of your starting weight or more.

First, we’ll help you kickstart your weight loss over 12 weeks with a low-calorie diet (shakes and soups).

After this, we’ll use a carefully managed plan to reintroduce healthy, nutritious food into your diet and focus on movement and maintaining a new healthy lifestyle.

Throughout the programme you will be fully-supported and monitored by expert clinicians and coaches to make sure you have everything you need to develop and maintain a healthy new lifestyle.

We will work together over 12 months, and the support you will receive during this time will include:

  • An initial one-to-one assessment
  • 20 sessions with your Health & Wellbeing diabetes practitioner
  • 39 online support modules
  • A final one-to-one assessment

  • Three-staged programme focused on helping individuals achieve their health goals
  • Achieve diabetes remission (target glucose levels with no medication)
  • Online programme resources which are accessible 24/7
  • Free sessions, support and resources throughout the year
