Stay healthy with COPD this winter

Winter can be a challenging time for those living with COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease). Cold weather and an increase in viruses can lead to flare-ups, making it essential to take extra care of your health. Here are some tips to help you manage your COPD effectively during the colder months.

Stay warm and avoid triggers

  • Dress warmly and protect your face with a scarf in cold weather.
  • Avoid smoky environments and exposure to cold, damp air.
  • Stay indoors on days with high air pollution or extremely cold weather.

Get vaccinated

  • Ensure you are up-to-date with your flu and COVID-19 vaccinations.
  • Speak to your GP about the pneumonia vaccine if you haven’t had it yet.

Recognise the signs of a flare-up

Symptoms of a COPD flare-up can include:

  • Increased shortness of breath, making it difficult to perform daily activities.
  • More frequent or severe coughing.
  • A change in the colour, amount, or thickness of sputum (phlegm).
  • Fever or feeling unusually hot and shivery.

If you notice any of these symptoms, check with your respiratory nurse or GP if you are eligible for a rescue pack and instructions on when to use one.

What is a COPD Rescue Pack?

A COPD rescue pack is a set of standby medications prescribed by your GP to help you manage a flare-up before you can see a healthcare professional.

For more information a COPD Rescue pack and how to use it read our COPD Rescue Pack information leaflet.

If you have any questions about your rescue pack or COPD management plan, contact your GP or COPD nurse for guidance.

If there is no improvement within two-three days contact your GP or NHS111.
