The 2023 NHS Staff Survey results show a positive improvement for the NHS Black Country Integrated Care Board (ICB).

The NHS Staff Survey is the largest of its kind and is carried out across thousands of NHS organisations across the country.

The results are aligned to the seven themes of the NHS People Promise - a pledge that everyone in the NHS will help improve the experience of working in the organisation – alongside the two additional elements of staff engagement and morale.

This includes:

  • we are always learning
  • we each have a voice that count
  • we are compassionate & inclusive
  • we are recognised and rewarded
  • we are safe & healthy
  • we work flexibly
  • we are a team
  • staff engagement
  • morale.

This is the second year the NHS Black Country ICB has took part in the survey and has achieved the third highest ICB positive score rate out of 29 ICBs that has used the same survey company.

The Black Country also has the best score out of all ICBs in the country across three of the nine key themes, with above average scores reported for the remaining themes.

In total, 78% of all employees completed this year’s survey, with results showing a year-on-year improvement on 90% of all questions. 67% of colleagues who responded to the survey said they would recommend the NHS Black Country ICB as a place to work and 65% feel that they are involved in deciding changes that affect work.

Other positive results showed that 65% of employees feel supported to develop their potential at work, more than half (53%) don’t think about leaving the organisation and 92% received an appraisal in the last 12 months.

Whilst majority of the results were positive, the survey did highlight some areas for improvement such as health, wellbeing and safety at work.

Mark Axcell, Chief Executive Officer for the NHS Black Country ICB, said: “The NHS staff survey is one of the largest workforce surveys in the world and is carried out every year to improve staff experiences across the NHS. Importantly, it provides us with an invaluable insight in to how our staff feel about work, what is working well and what we should be doing more of.

“I’d like to thank everyone who took the time to share their honest opinions of what it is like to work at the NHS Black Country ICB. Our results show positive improvements in a number of areas, including how colleagues feel about their job, their team, their personal development and the organisation, which is something we’re incredibly proud of.

“It’s also important to recognise that whilst the results are positive, there will always be areas to improve. We will work together with colleagues across the organisation to address these and make sure the changes they would like to see are made.

“We are committed to making the Black Country ICB a place that people are proud to be a part of and we will keep on working to maintain a positive culture where people feel valued and supported.”
