This Bone and Joint Health Week (12 - 20 October), people in the Black Country are being reminded of the importance of looking after their bones and joints, particularly during winter.
Cold weather can make joint pain worse, but there are simple ways to help keep bones and joints healthy.
Muscle, bone, and joint problems like arthritis and back pain affect many people. These conditions can get worse in winter, so we are asking everyone to take some simple steps to stay healthy and mobile.
There are many ways people can protect their bones and joints, including:
- Keep moving indoors - when it’s too cold to exercise outside, try gentle activities indoors if your condition allows you to do so.
- Eat healthy food whenever possible- a balanced diet with calcium and vitamin D helps make your bones strong.
- Wear appropriate footwear for the weather- slipping on ice is more likely in winter, which can hurt your joints. Wearing sturdy shoes with good grips can help you stay safe when walking outside.
- Keep warm - cold weather can make your joints feel stiff. Wear layers and keep your hands and knees warm with gloves or extra support when you go outside.
- Ask for help early - if you notice new or worsening pain in your bones or joints, visit your local pharmacy or speak to your GP. Getting help quickly can stop the pain from getting worse.
Dr Ananta Dave, Chief Medical Officer for the NHS Black Country Integrated Care Board, said: “Whether it’s moving regularly, eating well, or talking to your local pharmacist or GP about pain, it’s important for people to take care of their bones and joints, particularly as winter approaches.
“Bone and Joint Health Week is a great time to learn how simple changes can help you stay strong and healthy.
“By taking care of your bones and joints now, you can avoid more serious issues, like pain or injuries, that could affect your daily life in the future.”
