Pregnant women in Sandwell can now access recommended vaccinations at a new clinic at Sandwell Maternity Hub, with drop-in visits and appointments available to make protection easier and more convenient.

The clinic has opened at Sandwell Maternity Hub in Smethwick and offers seasonal flu, whooping cough (pertussis) and RSV vaccinations to eligible pregnant women.

The service is staffed by a midwife who can also offer an informal chat to anyone who is unsure about vaccinations or would like to find out more before deciding.

Sally Roberts, Chief Nurse and Chief Clinical and Quality Officer at Birmingham, Black Country and Solihull cluster ICBs, said:

“Vaccinations during pregnancy are an important way to help protect both mums and their babies from serious infections. They can give babies protection during the first few months of life, when they are particularly vulnerable.

“We want every pregnant woman to feel informed, supported and confident in making decisions about her health and her baby’s health. This new clinic offers a convenient way to access recommended vaccinations, as well as the opportunity to speak to a midwife, ask questions and discuss any concerns in a friendly and supportive setting.”

The clinic offers the following vaccinations to eligible pregnant women:

  • Seasonal flu: available at any stage of pregnancy.
  • Whooping cough (pertussis): available from 16 weeks of pregnancy.
  • RSV (respiratory syncytial virus): available from 28 weeks of pregnancy.

These vaccinations help protect pregnant women and their babies against infections that can cause serious illness. Antibodies produced by the mother following vaccination can pass to her baby, helping provide protection during the early months of life.

The clinic is based at:

Sandwell Maternity Hub
Oldbury Road
Smethwick
B66 1JE

Opening hours are:

  • Monday: 9am–5pm
  • Tuesday: 11am–7pm
  • Wednesday: 9am–5pm

Women can drop in during opening hours or call 0121 507 5371 to book an appointment. Free car parking is available at the hub.

The ICB encourages pregnant women to speak to their midwife or healthcare professional if they have questions about which vaccinations are recommended for them.
